Build Sydney Live 2013 - High-Level Design Brief

Posted by:Nathan Doughty on 21st October 2013 at 04:30 PM GMT

Dear BSL Participants,

As promised we would like to start sharing more details about this year’s Design Brief.  We will be drip-feeding a bit more info to you over the course of the coming week, leading up to the full detailed brief just prior to the start of the competition.

The site is a high-profile component of the Darling Harbour Revitalisation Scheme encompassing 19 hectares within the overall master-plan for the scheme. The brief will require teams to prove an alternative detailed design for the International Convention Centre Sydney.

A key goal of the design deliverables will be demonstrating that the construction phase will contribute ‘Zero Carbon’ built environment. Your design and constructability documentation should be in line with the goals of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and in compliance with Greenstar to a rating level of 6 Star (World Leader level) for the project.   See http://www.gbca.org.au/green-star/green-star-overview/  for more information on Green Star.

High-Level Design Brief

The International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney)

Overview

  • You should provide a design for a new International Convention Centre for Sydney as part of the specified 19 Hectare area of Darling Harbour Live project.  This site is indicated in the image above as enclosed within the solid blue lines.
  • The site is split into two main areas – Bayside and Parkside.  The site currently contains two structures – one at Bayside and the other at Parkside.  The structure at Parkside is situated underneath the overpasses for the A4 Western Distributor Freeway.  The Parkside area of the site is shaded in orange in the above image and the Bayside in purple.
  • Incorporate demolition of the existing Convention Centre Building structures from Bayside and Parkside to establish a new Convention Centre covering the existing area (Bayside and Parkside).
  • The ground cover area for the new ICC is 19,000 square meters.
  • Design one unified building model for both the Bayside and Parkside areas of the site, taking into account the existing road infrastructure of the site (A4 Freeway) which must not be altered.
  • Total convention capacity to facilitate more than 12,000 people. It should include separate convention spaces for up to 2,500, up to 1,000 and up to 750 people
  • Design should be in compliance with Greenstar Level 6 Star as set out by the GBCA
  • There is an existing underground car parking garage beneath the neighbouring ICC Exhibition Centre building structure. You should extend this facility underneath the Parkside area of the site to add space for 400 cars. Entry and egress should be located off of Darling Drive.
